Turn Humans Into Fuel Without Losing Your Economy

The Bioreactor converts humans into fuel for Hull Rupture’s ship economy. Keeping it supplied matters, but so does leaving enough humans to operate the rest of the ship. The September 2026 demo update added an Auto control to reduce repeated manual assignments.

This guide describes that updated demo behavior. Earlier playtest complaints about clicking humans into the Bioreactor predate the automation change; they should not be read as instructions for the newer interface.

How the Auto Button Works

The official September demo update describes a small Auto button on converters, with the Bioreactor as its main use case. In that version, enabling the feature sends two humans toward the Bioreactor. When only one remains in the queue, the system sends another human automatically.

That is queue replenishment, rather than a promise that the ship can sustain unlimited fuel production. The update calls the feature experimental. It does not publish a universal fuel-per-human rate or a configurable queue-size menu.

To use the documented behavior:

  1. Select the relevant converter and find its Auto control.
  2. Enable Auto when you want human assignments to continue without issuing each command yourself.
  3. Watch the remaining workforce as well as the fuel supply.
  4. Reassess the assignment when other modules need workers or your fuel demand changes.

The first two steps describe the control; the monitoring steps follow from the shared workforce used throughout the ship.

Balance Fuel Demand Against Human Supply

Humans are also required for production, module operation, repairs, and other ship tasks. Diverting more of them into a fuel converter can therefore expose a different shortage elsewhere. Keep reproduction and staffing in view instead of judging the Bioreactor only by the size of the fuel stockpile.

Engine decisions matter too. The developers explain that stronger engine setups consume more Fuel, while additional modules increase ship mass. Faster exploration can bring more opportunities, but expanding propulsion before production can support it adds economic pressure.

Use Info Mode to inspect the current per-minute resource income introduced in the same September update. That display describes current production, not a prediction of future supply. A present surplus can change when inputs, staffing, or production limits change.

FAQ

What does the Bioreactor produce?

Its documented role is converting humans into fuel. Those humans are an input resource, not simply permanent workers assigned without consequence.

How many humans does Auto send?

The September demo implementation sends two, then sends another when only one remains in the queue.

Does Auto eliminate workforce management?

No. It automates the repeated assignment described by the update. The same humans are needed across the ship, so fuel production still has to fit the wider economy.

Why do older guides say the Bioreactor needs constant clicking?

Those accounts describe an earlier playtest or demo. The September update introduced the Auto feature after developers acknowledged the repeated-assignment problem.
